Mayo Clinic consists of three campuses, one each in Rochester, Minnesota; Jacksonville, Florida; and Scottsdale, Arizona. As a major, well-recognized medical institution, Mayo draws patients literally from around the world. Approximately 5% of patients come from outside the United States, and 10-15% comes from distant states. Therefore, the definition of the primary catchment areas is based upon the geographic regions that provide at least 70% of our patients. The Mayo Clinic Rochester (MCR) catchment area consists of 18 counties in southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa. The region covers 10,504 square miles and has a population of 543,687 (Table 1 and 2). The region is predominantly Caucasian, although slightly higher minority population rates are observed in Olmsted County, where Mayo Clinic Rochester is located. Recent census estimates indicate that persons of color living in Olmsted County have changed dramatically in the last decade. According to census area data, such cultural groups as Somali, Hispanic/Latinos, and South East Asians have increased the percentage of people of color living in Rochester and the surrounding counties from 3% in 1990 to nearly 10% in 2000.
Although the vast majority of our clinical research has been based on the Rochester campus, the recent extension of GCRC investigator activities to Jacksonville and Scottsdale presents opportunities to expand the diversity of our catchment areas. Thus, we present demographics for these two sites as evidence of the potential we are planning to realize during the next funding period. The Mayo Clinic Scottsdale (MCS) catchment area contains five counties in Arizona. The region covers 58,441 square miles and has a population of 3.4 million (Tables 1 and 2). More than 70% of residents in the catchment area live in Maricopa County, where Mayo Clinic Scottsdale is located, primarily within the city of Phoenix and surrounding communities. African-Americans and Asians each comprise about 3% of the population. The area is ethnically diverse, with more than 14% of the population classified as other/mixed race according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The Mayo Clinic Jacksonville (MCJ) catchment area contains 20 counties in eastern Florida and southeastern Georgia. The region covers 15,473 square miles and has a population of 2.7 million (Tables 1 and 2). During 2001, approximately 76% of new patients seen at MCJ resided within the catchment area. About 19% of area residents live in Duval County, where Mayo Clinic Jacksonville is located, primarily within the city of Jacksonville and surrounding communities. African-Americans comprise 15% of the total catchment area and nearly 28% of the Duval County population.
