The Office of Diversity in Clinical Research (ODCR) presents seminars to Mayo consultants, allied health staff, residents and students about health disparity issues and the need for inclusion of under-represented persons of color in research. Also, the development of culturally-specific training sessions have been undertaken in conducting research in ethnic populations addressing the communities needs, knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about health and health care systems. On-site work in the areas of assessment regarding the institution's outreach tools, and clinical research area has resulted in the initiation of a photobook to assist in the consent process for LEP (limited English proficiency needs) and literacy levels.
Cultural stories about healing practices and healers are currently being collected, to bridge the clinical design, integrate practice, and understand cultural contexts. Recognizing the need for diversity in the medical profession, as well as the acquisition of culturally competent skills in clinical research and patient/community care outcomes, the Offices of the GCRC and ODCR have initiated clinical research roundtables to maintain the dialogue on best practice regarding minority populations. The ODCR has also provided diversity education events throughout the year within the community. Staff continues to consult with African American, Hmong, Somali, And Latino cultural brokers and community contacts in attempting to assure culturally responsive care.
