Description:

The Body Composition Core serves investigators studying a wide variety of metabolic, cardiovascular, respiratory, muscle, and bone related diseases. This core has vast expertise in using a variety of techniques to assess bone density and body composition in health and disease. The Body Composition Core has facilities and equipment located at both Saint Marys and Methodist-Charlton Clinical Research Units.

Dr. Michael Jensen is considered one of the world’s leading experts on regulation of lipid metabolism and how altered lipid regulation contributes to obesity. Dr. Jensen serves as the Director of the Body Composition Core. Dr. Sundeep Khosla, a noted investigator in the field of bone metabolism provides added expertise with regards to measures of bone structure and density.

Services/Equipment:

• Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptometry (DEXA) Scan acquisition/analysis for total body composition, hip/femur, AP spine, forearm bone mineral density
• Custom bone mineral density(BMD) measurements and analysis via DEXA
• Participant weight limitation of 136kg
• Consultation regarding BMD or body composition
• 3-dimensional CT measurement of wrist or ankle for bone structure and density (pre-approval)
• Analysis of computed tomography images for adipose and lean tissue area
